However, this is not an official rulebook. This is not an unofficial rulebook actually, since these are, in fact,
not rules at all. They are guidelines, inferences, and conjecture-based principles that I find handy for
creating official-sounding names for SW-RPG characters. Use what you will. Share & Enjoy! Special thanks
to Pablo Hidalgo of the SW Index and Bob Vitas of the Unofficial SW Encyclopedia for their vast knowledge
of all that is Star Wars, and all those others who've added a morsel or two along the way. On the safe side,
I'd like to apologize to everyone I've ever met, and most of the people that I haven't met yet. I think that
covers everything.

If All Else Fails . . .
Rule 1: Try writing names backwards -
It's simple but effective. For example, "Harry one" is changed to Enoyrrah
(good for a Wookiee). Joel changes to Leoj (an excellent name for a Sullustan).
Rule 2: If you can't get it straight, make it crooked -
You can embellish reversals by taking out letters or adding additional ones (especially the "Heavy on:" letters I noted). IE: Steven -- Nevet (a Rodian? Jawa?); Anne -- Elnna (Chadra-Fan? Ho'din?)
Rule 3: Use foreign languages -
For most Earthlings, halfway across the planet is as alien as halfway across the
galaxy. Who's to know? You can pickup translation dictionaries with a little digging and a buck or two. Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese are the easiest, but many words are common between those languages and English, and may be noticed. Most German names seem "silly" instead of "exotic" to English speakers. That leaves Oriental [excellent], Greek [a bit verbose, but not bad], Cyrillic [fairly limited name-wise, but many interesting words], Polynesian [fun to say], Slavic [pro: obscure, con: tough to pronounce], Gaelic [sounds awesome, but spelling is a challenge], African [a wealth of languages here, try starting in the Northwest], Scandinavian [some very good word patterns, especially Swedish], & Native American tongues. And don't forget Latin; it's one of the best, non-spoken languages this planet has to offer. Ask a friend in another country to translate a few key words for you (try ones like "ghost", "knight", "friend", "shadow" or "enemy") and see what you come up with. I can translate a decent variety of languages myself, so if you've misplaced your babel fish, I could probably take a shot at it if you drop me a word or
three. Even better, AltaVista has a competent (and free!!) translation engine:
http://babelfish.altavista.com/translate.dyn
Rule 4: Name dropping -
Name dropping is a time honored event in SW; just ask the pros about all of their harmless little name "Easter eggs." Just don't make it too obvious, or players get annoyed. And if your sister finds out you named a Hutt in her likeness.... well... it's not gonna be pretty... ;o) Also, don't try the "I'll just rearrange the letters in Skywalker" approach. Players seem to pick up on character rip-off's fairly quickly, and usually see them as corny rather than clever.
Rule 5: Rob, steal and pillage the classics -
Star Wars has often been termed a modern mythology. Because of this, names borrowed from classic stories and myths often fit right in. Also, any and all sci-fi novels are also fair game for name-mining, especially far future series like Asimov's "Foundation" and Simmons' "Hyperion".
Rule 6: Make common names look uncommon -
This is the oldest trick in the sci-fi handbook. By respelling common English names with outlandish variants, you can create names that look authentic, yet familiar. Example: Kip Dunham, with a few modifications, polishes into Kyp Durron. On the same tone, Jason become Jacen, Ben becomes Bane or Bren, Maude become Mahd, Bill becomes Bin (or, better yet, Bynne), Chris becomes Crix, Carl become Carlist, you get the idea... [this is possibly the easiest and most reliable way to make a good character name, at least for a human.]
Rule 7: "Be" the name -
Languages are going to be effected by environment and physiology. If it's a Mon Cal or Quarren, say some names through a glass of water. If it's a Rodian, pucker your lips up and act like Greedo (the taunting tone of voice helps a lot). If it's a big, hulking character, bellow a few times and then start
rumbling off names (Your neighbors love this. Try doing it in crowded elevators and subway stations
;o).
Rule 8: Use a formula -
Don't worry, algebra-haters, there's no math involved. To be pronounceable, all names follow some sort of a pattern of vowels and consonants. You can make easy Star Wars names on the fly simply by rearranging these patterns. For instance, a widespread one is to take the first three letters of your last name and add the first two letters of your first name. Now take the first three letters of your mother's maiden name, and add the first three letters of your birthplace. I got Kelmi Cobcor, which is a passable SW name. Or, try taking the first four letters of your middle name. Then take the first three letters of your current hometown, and add the first three letters of the closest major city. This time I got Will Metroc, which is also decent. Play around with it, you'll find plenty of usable patterns.
Rule 9: Make your names "high scoring" -
Going on the assumption that other languages are usually drastically different from English (why not? It's almost completely off-kilter from any and all Earth languages), rare letters may be common on other worlds. So, you need a conversion scale. Here's what you can do. Convert a Scrabble board (tm Milton-Bradley) into an Alien language workshop. This complicated procedure can be accomplished by flipping the board over. Try making names that are high scoring yet plausibly pronounceable. If you don't have a Scrabble board, here's the scoring system: : [A, E, I, L, N, O, R, S, T, U]=1 -- [D, G]=2 -- [B, C, M, P]=3 -- [F, H, V, W, Y]=4 -- [K]=5 -- [J, X]=8 -- [Q, Z]=10
Rule 10: Go exploring -
Grab a world atlas and start looking at the names of cities and regions. You can find some killer names that way. Addis Ababa... an Aqualish bodyguard? No, the capital of Ethiopia. Narvik... a Rodian mercenary? Nope, a city in north-east Norway. You never know what you'll find.
Rule 11: When all else fails, CHEAT! -
The internet is your friend, so use it. Name directories like this one - http://jerryhill.tripod.com/, abound. Use 'em.
